Initiating a Scan
When you are ready to scan, go to the ‘Initiate Scan’ tab press the ‘Scan’ button. Once the scan has started the actions Movere is performing will appear in the progress window. Pressing the ‘Stop’ button will halt the inventory process:
Stopping a Scan
The two most common questions pertaining to stopping a scan are:
- How do I know when the scan has completed?
- Can I click the ‘Stop’ button when the Console says ‘Scanning in progress’?
The Movere Service is a listener, and it will listen to the port specified in the configuration file UNTIL the user clicks the ‘Stop’ button. If the ‘Stop’ button is clicked while scans are still running, then the output files created after the Movere Service stopped will be discarded.
So how do we know when it’s safe to stop a scan?
At the bottom of the Movere Console, in the screenshot below, you will see the message: “Scanning in progress. Press ‘Stop’ to cancel”. You will also see that every event is timestamped:
These timestamps let the user know when they can click on the ‘Stop’ button, as there is a 30-minute timeout specified in the ‘Movere.Service.exe.config’ file, refer below:
If you are running a device scan targeting hundreds of endpoints, then the easiest way to determine if all scans have concluded is to look at the last timestamp appearing in the Console. If the last recorded event occurred more than 30 minutes ago then you can safely click the ‘Stop’ button as any scans that had not completed during that time would have been terminated in accordance with the timeout value specified in the configuration file.
If you are only targeting a small number of devices, performing an AD extraction, extracting Office 365 data or querying a vCenter Appliance, and the number of output files returned is equal to the number of devices, domains, Office 365 subscriptions or vCenter Appliances being targeted then you can immediately click on the ‘Stop’ button without having to wait for the 30-minute timeout to occur.
